Do NOT waste any time learning the alphabet or studying the phonetics, simply begin reading. Listen and read. Let your intuitive mind take charge and you WILL learn, I guarantee.

The best way to learn to read Russian is to have the audio for a simple dialogue like the one to the right and read along, out loud. With a dialogue, there's a natural repetition and 'spiralling' of words. Words are repeated frequently while new ones are added.

This video will introduce you to your very first words in Russian. (PS. This is me on the video with my poor Russian pronunciation. That's the old fashioned way, and it's the hard way. They have several vocabulary builders, quizzes and a 'talking' keyboard which is interesting for a look. The girl in the quizzes really cracks me up. ilike2learn.com - index

Many language programs, like Rosetta Stone, Transparent Language and many others, take this approach and if you've ever tried them you know, they don't work very well. And what's even worse, they're expensive!

I don't want to sound overly critical but it's the details that make a language program truly effective. And what's worse, many of the programs don't teach you REAL Russian. What they teach you is often not what they say in real life.

Instead of flash cards or nifty flash software, simply read, listen and speak actual sentences expressing ideas. The flow of words and ideas without wasting time listening to English is what really makes a program effective.

The Best Way to Start Learning Russian
We've set up the lessons in both video and 'slidecast' format. To make my first lesson, I had to learn to type, so after getting my keyboard set up I made a template on a piece of paper by checking to see what letter each key was.

Yeah, pretty crude, but it was good enough. Then I started some drills like I remembered from learning to type in high school. fff jjj f.. Oh man, this is WAY too boring!!

So, I just started making my first lesson: What's this? What's that? ('B> MB>?)

I knew some basics and had a course book from a course I also quit because it was too boring, so I started typing: What's this? It's a book. ...and so on. ('B> MB>? -B> :=830.)

Sure, I was typing VERY slowly but after just 2 hours, I knew the whole keyboard!! I couldn't hardly believe it, but it was true. And for letters that aren't used so often, if I tried to remember (with my conscious mind), always wrong. If I relaxed and said, "Okay fingers, where is it?", letting my intuitive mind take over.... Bingo! Always right.

That was my first concrete proof that all this intuitive learning stuff really was true.

I've since tried it with several people and all of them knew the keyboard within 1 to 3 hours.

Here's a slightly more attractive Russian keyboard image that you can save.

How NOT to Learn Russian

Traditional language learning methods can be almost unbelievably painful and difficult. It's still rather cool to have a look.

The book used in the class I started was fairly similar.

Notice that I said "the class I started", meaning I didn't finish it. It was just TOO BORING!! The class was at the Russian Cultural Center in Jakarta; it was very cheap; and the teacher was a very nice Russian guy; but I just couldn't force myself to continue.

Most of the class was spent listening to Indonesians pronounce Russian badly and the Russian teacher pronounce English badly. What I wanted was to simply hear proper Russian pronunciation and try copying it. And that's exactly what's possible with a website and audio files.

They spent the first 2 weeks just studying the alphabet, and thank goodness I started the course 2 weeks late.

For all of you who have tried learning Russian, you will be able to completely relate to everything I say.

The Russian alphabet, although it is easy to learn as I said earlier, can be incredibly confusing when you immediately introduce 'printed' and 'written' versions. Or for typed versions; 'regular' and 'italics'.

Suddenly the 'T' looks like an 'm'!!

Now, although Russian phonetics are much more consistent that English, there's no benefit in learning the Russian alphabet as a first step in learning Russian. The best first step is ALWAYS to simply read, listen and speak (copy what you hear).

And after tediously working through the alphabet, we finally progressed to the first lesson.

Okay, some good points, but loads of room for improvement.

First, the text is too small. Students are just beginning to read a new alphabet. Make it bigger. Also, use a plain font so that it's as clear as possible.

Second, give the English equivalents. If you don't give it, then I will be busy writing it instead of focusing on learning during the lesson time.

Third, use common English names in the first lesson so that students can quickly learn the phonetics of the Russian alphabet.

And on the second page, some questions.

Mate, DO NOT ask me any questions yet!! I am still completely lost and barely grasping the basics. DO NOT create anxiety by asking a question.

You'll notice later in our lessons that the incremental steps in learning are EXTREMELY small, thus building confidence, not creating anxiety.

For example, the first exercise would be to read the same dialogue again and chose the correct missing word:
GB> / :B> (what / who)

Because the 'sound' is still ringing in your ears, it's extremely easy and most students get 100%. Thus, they gain confidence and the first step in activating their language has been initiated.

It's really a simple process but nobody (that I've found) has prepared a program that actually does it.

Lots of programs SAY they provide such a method and material, but when you look at them closely, they're never that good; just a variation of old methods with fancy new technology.

Join me as I learn Russian and lay down the path for you and others to follow. :)

Steps to Learn Russian

Below is a sample of the progression in exercises to begin learning Russian or any other language.

The first step is to read and listen to dialogues where new words are introduced gradually, with definitions provided, and words and expressions are repeated in a natural manner and often enough to allow them time to 'sink in'.
(Here's the link to our Russian Lesson 1 if you didn't have a look earlier and would like to now. Russian Lesson 1 )

What's this?
